These programs are designed for children ages 3 through 6 who are enrolled in the Lab School. The programs will meet for 6 one-hour sessions.
French/English After School Program
The goal of the French/English after school program is to incorporate French vocabulary into play. Through play, songs, and reading, we will explore the French language, ultimately providing the students with a foundation for pursuing French in the future.
Learning a second language can be extremely beneficial to people of all ages, but it has been found that the best time to attempt to learn a second language is at a young age, so now is the perfect time to sign up! Having knowledge of a second language will help your children expand their knowledge of culture and open up their minds to new ideas, as well as give them an advantage in our increasingly diverse society.
French/English After School will take place Mondays (February 12, 19, 26, March 5, 12, and ending on March 19), from 3:00 to 4:00. The fee is $75 per child. Please know that space is limited and registration will close once the program is full. The class will take place in Room 147, Ms. Debbie’s classroom.

Spanish/English After School Program
Here at the Spanish after school program, our goal is to introduce the Spanish language to all of the learners. Through play, we will explore colors, music, dancing, books and more all while using Spanish vocabulary. There are many benefits to learning a second language at an early age, such as enhanced cognitive development and a better understanding of the first language. During this program, we will have fun and learn a very important foundation for learning foreign languages in the future. Native Spanish speakers will have the same opportunities to learn English in a play based environment.
Spanish/English After School will take place Tuesdays (February 13, 20, 27, March 6, 13, and ending on March 20), from 3:00 to 4:00. The fee is $75 per child. Please know that space is limited and registration will close once the program is full. The class will take place in Room 147, Ms. Debbie’s classroom.
Meet the Instructor: Patrick McGowan
Patrick McGowan is a senior Spanish education major who demonstrates a passion for teaching language in his playful style and positive interactions with the children. Patrick gets an immense amount of joy from giving back to the children because they are so eager to learn. The excitement the children show brings him back week after week. After coming back from a semester in Granada, Spain, Patrick is excited to return to the Lab School to lead this program. Read more about Patrick’s love of teaching as he is featured in this article using this link, The Polyglot, a UD publication for his department. http://www.dllc.udel.edu/alumni/the-polyglot/
Nicole Spaulding will be co-teaching with Patrick this Spring, as she demonstrates a fluency in Spanish as well as French.

Wiggles and Giggles: Yoga for Kids
Our class will combine elements of laughter and play with traditional yoga asanas (poses) and pranayama (meditation) to cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Several studies, including a report from the Harvard Medical School last year, has found that yoga proves to improve the physical and mental health of children. Yoga not only aids in the development of fine and gross motor skills, but provides children with new tools on how to handle stress, and regulate themselves.
Wiggles and Giggles: Yoga for Kids will take place Wednesdays (February 14, 21, 28, March 7, 14, and ending on March 21), from 3:00 to 4:00. The fee is $75 per child. Please know that space is limited and registration will close once the program is full. The class will take place in Room 147, Ms. Debbie’s classroom.
Meet the Instructor: Tess Dhyani
Tess is a senior at UD majoring in International Relations and is also a long-time yogini. She has been practicing yoga since she was 13. Her practice deepened after traveling to her father’s childhood home, the Himalayas, in 2014 to study Buddhism and Yoga. After returning home, she received her 200-hour yoga teacher certification in 2015. Tess teaches yoga to a variety of audiences including the D1 UD Men’s Lacrosse Team and students with cerebral palsy, however, she finds that yoga is most beneficial for children. Tess worked at a summer camp setting up a yoga program for toddlers and found that the effects were remarkable, not only in motor functioning but in skills of self-regulating and handling stress.

Fine Arts After School Program
Painting with the Masters
“Every now and then one paints a picture that seems to have opened a door and serves as a stepping stone to other things.”
― Pablo Picasso
Painting with the Masters will be a class that combines art history with self-expression and exploration. Each class will begin with a brief lesson to educate children on the importance of specific artists, the movements associated with the influential artists, and the techniques the artists used. The information learned would be used as a reference for day’s lesson, which will be flexible for each child. I would like to inspire the children to not only replicate what the master’s painted but to try to view their world through a different lens and create what they want within the lessons framework. As art is gaining traction as a new therapeutic standard, the day’s painting would not only allow children to gain skills and an education in history, but it would give them a new medium to process and express their feelings and creativity, expanding into other aspects of their lives as well.
Fine Arts After School will take place on Thursdays (February 15, 22, March 1, 8, 15 and ending on March 22), from 3:00 to 4:00. The fee is $90.00 per child and includes materials as well. Please know that space is limited and registration will close once the program is full. The class will take place in Room 147, Ms. Debbie’s classroom.
Meet the Instructor: Juliana Jones
Juliana Jones is senior at the University of Delaware, completing her Fine Arts degree with a specialization in painting. She worked at Providence Creek Academy as a Camp Counselor and Arts & Crafts Leader, encouraging the campers to view everyday objects and encounters as references for both creativity and play. While at the University, Juliana has spent years of working in her studio and completing commissioned works as a free-lancer. As an artist that was first introduced to painting in the classroom, she is excited to pass along and inspire the life-fulfilling creativity and passion the visual arts have afforded her to the next generation!
